Sergio Padilla was born in Mexico, where he grew up and studied advertising design and illustration.
After his education he started working as an art dealer and was trapped in the world of trading art for twenty years. During this time he learned about the great masters of classic, modern and contemporary art and got deeply involved in the magic of art, which led him to discover his passion for painting.
In 1991, he decided for the first time to paint his first painting in watercolor on cardboard, but continued dealing in art.
Early 2011 he discovered an incredible easel in an antique store, and he fell in love immediately by its beauty. Inspired by this great piece of wood he felt an irrepressible desire to paint.
One month later he started painting in oil on cotton canvas in an impressionistic style, but found out like already in 1991 this wasn’t him. He needed to do work were his hart was.
Only 7 years ago, in 2012 he started to work in hyperrealism what bears fruit and his career as a professional painter took off. Immediately he was asked to exhibit his paintings in galleries along the West coast of the USA, where some works sold to collectors who saw his talent.
In 2013 he exhibited for the first time in The MUNAL, Collective “Royal Talents” in The National Art Museum in Mexico, City.
In 2014 during a new exhibition he added a monochrome chiaroscuro painting. It was a painting from a fragment of one of the most famous sculpture masterpieces from Michael Angelo, The Pieta. He painted oil on cotton canvas. His work was well-received and praised by curators and art critics.
Immediately he was asked to exhibit his paintings in galleries along the West coast of the USA, where some works sold to collectors who saw his talent.
After being exhibited in the senate of Mexico in 2017 and 2018 his works found their way to important Mexican collections.
In his hyper-realistic paintings Sergio likes to add surprising aspects what gives the paintings an extra dimension. Also, the details in his paintings are amazing, and the light on the subjects looks natural. Many spectators think the painting is better and sharper than a photo.
Sergio is a natural talent who discovered his passion and skills at a mature point in his life. His success made that he could move to his own house outside Mexico-city where he also has built his own studio.
He loves for the great masters of art and design forms the basis of his works. An idea for the next painting always starts with seeing a subject his loves. This can be a sculpture, painting, car or just something he sees in his daily life.
A painting starts always with a design and which part and how to paint it on the large canvasses he uses. He uses numerous photos and sketches to come to this design. A new work can be for months, even longer as a year on one of his easel before he considered it to be finished.
Sergio Padilla:
“For me painting is not only a form of expression, it has become a part of my existence”
